KEY DRIVERS
Financial pressures: COVID-19 exacerbated existing financial weaknesses in football, creating buying opportunities for investors
Perceived undervaluation: Clubs are seen as undervalued assets, many experts believe that football clubs have only reached around 40% of their commercial potential considering the global popularity of the sport.
Continuous economic growth despite global economic uncertainty, recent Deloitte 2025 report shows the money league clubs themselves collectively generated north of €11bn, 6% increase on 2024. 14 of the Premier League 20 clubs sit in Deloitte top 30, whilst nine lay within the top 20.
Private Equity now sees sport has having a multi pawn effect, that developing aspects of the game itself can be advantageous in itself but influencing the surrounding ecosystem can be more economically beneficial in the long term.
Regulators not having clear guidelines or the foresight to see where this is leading means that more groups can manipulate the operating space bypassing integrity or ethical issues.
